ETHICS: An Office Romance Gone Wrong

When comparing my views with those of the two experts, I find myself aligning more with the opinions of Lazar. The reading emphasized that Elizabeth loved the work she was doing- the entrepreneurial culture challenged and developed her abilities, she was cultivating a reputation for herself in the corporate world, as evidenced by her near-daily recruitment offers, and was being very well compensated. While the work culture and the unfortunate circumstances around Brad and Claudia’s relationship are important, I would ask Elizabeth if were not for the mishandling of the relationships, would she still be considering leaving? The reading framed this situation as the sole motivation for why Elizabeth was looking for alternatives, shaping my view.

Sivasubramanian describes how Elizabeth earned her position through sheer passion and hard work, and this, apart from the office romance, seems like a dream position that Elizabeth could still learn a lot from. With emotions still running high after a 2-month situationship, I believe Elizabeth should navigate this time with professional help, like a therapist, for healing to allow for a clearer headspace when deciding the next steps. Like Lazar, I agree that she should leave for the right opportunity at the time of her choosing. I also do agree that this situation highlighted a gross double standard within the company in the comments that were being made to Elizabeth and not Brad.  If after careful consideration of how the dynamics of what is occurring, and how it was handled by the company, affects her position and potential for well-being and growth, then she should find a new opportunity having learned a lesson about her boundaries with her work and love-life.
