“I love this technology but I hate how the companies are making it” ~Wodtke
Truly, the advances in AI are fascinating, and quite useful often. However, the business practices are difficult to comprehend. For example, OpenAI has good models, but they should have been a non-profit anyway. This shows an element of money-hungry cooperation that seems to be able to do anything to achieve that, and that’s a problem. This falls under exploitation of consumers, which is “ … another murky direction”, that I can focus on.
Mostly every unethical behavior amounts to exploitation, be it the non-environmental-friendly data centers or the shady ways of data collection to train models. If I were to work at OpenAI or a company that exploits people in one way or another, I would choose a role that directly positively impacts people more than it exploits them.
Question: If the company you are working for does really good things and bad things at the same time, and you just realized about the bad stuff, what would you do?
