I love the work done at Meta AI and their push with open-source FMs like Llama. If I join Meta, I would see myself on their AI team performing research or serving as a PM at one of their research labs. I would be involved in academia and would not be involved in handling user data or the endless privacy and security issues that plague Meta. In my head, in this specific role, I do not hold myself responsible for all the things that take place in the company. I am only responsible for the work that my team does and it is the job of C-Suites to handle larger business.
I believe that despite the shortcomings of Meta, the company also does a lot of good for the world. This means that I still want to work on cutting-edge tech tech and contribute to the positive mission of the company even if that means justifying to myself that my work doesn’t directly contribute to the unethical practices of the company.
