This is a difficult question to answer because there are a lot of aspects to consider. I don’t believe Facebook is an ethical company because of data privacy concerns and the willful spread of misinformation.
As per the reading, I would ask myself how close is my work to those actions I believe are wrong. If I’d be working in a team in charge of user data, I would take this job because I could have influence (perhaps small) in how the user privacy is being protected. Being able to influence from the inside out seems to be more effective in my eyes toward being more ethical than completely ignoring the company as a whole. I think this would be allowing unethical practices to continue.
I would also think about this from the perspective of what benefits I could gain from working at a company like Facebook. Although Facebook is not my dream company, I know that working at Facebook could add valuable experience to my resume that would enable me to have more flexibility in choosing another company to work for. Like mentioned in the reading, “your options for working will increase and correspondingly the possibilities for ethically satisfying employment.” Ultimately, I’d love to work at a company that’s values and actions align with my morals and perhaps working at Facebook could enable that for me.
