Response: Ethical Jobs

I would accept a job at Facebook because I believe that it’s possible and even valuable to do ethical work for an unethical company. Facebook has undoubtedly exploited their consumers by using algorithms that optimize for engagement with little concern for the effects on their users’ collective mental health. However, they do own several platforms that millions of people use, and work needs to be continuously done to ensure people’s safety on these platforms. In doing that work, I could make a positive impact on an almost uniquely vast pool of users while learning the skills necessary to do it for a project of my own interest. Overall, by taking the job, I would be making an impact in the present while preparing myself to make an impact of more interest to me in the future.
