As I read this article, my mind kept swimming back to thinking about issues where workout gurus would sell workout and diet plans on social media, pandering to people’s inner desires for a quick and easy fix to their health. However, the real secret to getting fit is consistency and hard work.
Similarly, when I think about Design Thinking, the nuts and bolts of patterns used to approach issues are great, but the main driver for Design Thinking is quality training and expertise of material. As the author mentioned, it’s quite important to think about if the outcomes of great design thinking are achievable with just the tools. As such, there is a major con in this approach because people straightforwardly think that a framework would solve all of their issues.
One of the failures that I can think about is the Juicero Press, an over-engineered device that would produce juice made from packets that users would purchase via subscription. I think what was a huge failure was just not knowing where the problems were to be defined. Rather than tackling the rather simple problem of: how do we get users their desired juice? it seems that Juicero created an artificial demand and desire for the product.
