Week 1 Milestone: Cold Interviews

  • Works as a Staff Product Manager (actually recently promoted from senior PM) on Walmart Marketplace API Ecosystem in Sunnyvale
  • Has been on PTO (Planned time off)

Walk me through an average day

  • Start the day checking Slack, Microsoft Teams, and emails.
  • A lot of my work now is scoping quarter deliverables. Last quarter I worked with the MCP OpenAPI team.
    • Met with the Senior Engineer and the Interns that delivered. RAG solution to developer docs for all engineers in Walmart Global Tech. Weekly syncs.
    • Understanding the technical constraints and vouching for any databases requested by the interns. This project was just as much mine as theirs.
    • A lot of it was talking to sellers and stakeholders of database teams or AI governance teams to request the proper technologies interns request and to vouch for “this project”

When did work last feel great? What made it great?

  • Being able to deliver the RAG solution, the interns had a successful summer and presentation. It is currently on stage (metrics are great) and the next step is production (Kind of why im on pto right now..)

When did work last go badly? What happened?

  • Cannot think of a specific time to be quite frank, but whenever meetings are stale and nothing is decided. It’s like I just wasted time. But also I need to recalculate my approach because I often need something from them.

“One of my favorite parts of PM at Walmart so far has been the brilliant interns that have delivered excellent work per quarter.”

I wished I followed up on the difference between PM work at Walmart vs Amazon and the difference between Senior PM and Staff PM. There was never really an awkward silence or pause, but more so no knowing how far to ask for the specific details. Although I felt like he gave detailed answers where he felt comfortable, perhaps that was his way of telling me what hes comfortable with sharing.
