Week 3 PSP: Take Apart a Pitch Deck

The pitch deck I chose to take apart came from Airbnb. They took a very straight forward approach when making their slides by clearly outlining/stating the problem they are trying to solve along with their solution in the first three slides. They divide the problem into three main points that they hope their product will solve as an all encompassing online booking platform for local hosts. The evidence backing their solution is through their business model. The deck first defines the market size, then it goes through the business model, and lastly through the competitors that solve some parts of the problem. Airbnb began to define their market size starting with broad numbers of trips booked, and then narrowing down on a more niche market of worldwide trips, that are targeted for budget friendly, and booked online.

Analyzing this pitch from an investor’s pov, this pitch is missing where exactly the current product is at the date of presentation. It is missing if they have already launched (and if so when they did), what they learned from their launch, and their launch numbers. They have a slide titled “User Testimonials” which implies they have launched, however this is the only information they have on that matter. For investors I believe it is important for them to know what the company’s MRR, number of users currently on the platform, and user retention rate are. This information would add credibility to their pitch and help investors see the company projected value. Lastly, Airbnb’s specific pitch deck also includes the financial ask to investors but they do not say how they will allocate this money.

From this pitch I’ll steal their style of being straight to the point, ensuring that there is no ambiguity when it comes to defining a problem.
