Taking a job at Facebook is difficult but not because there are ethical challenges in the company. I think that any company that you work for will have certain implications on how the world operates. For example, a lot of people got laid off because of industrializing the agriculture sector and many lost their jobs, but does that mean we should have not invented machines that could have increased human productivity? Well on the other side it was because of industrialization that a lot of the world’s population didn’t suffer from hunger. Now if we take this approach to Facebook, we should not overlook all the positive effects of this company on human society but also consider the externalities. For example, some countries use Facebook to organize protests to claim their freedom from oppressive governments, and you can feel good about working for Facebook which enables human freedom and connectivity while some governments use it spread propaganda. According to the reading and the example of the Psilocybin Project, everyone along the way who enabled the experimentation to happen played a role in making it happen, so who can we blame for the externalities of Facebook and who can we reward for all the benefits of Facebook for the world? I’d say that each contribution to the company will have different levels of responsibility and not everyone is considered equal we need to draw a line between the effects of responsibilities.
