Working for Ethically Complicated Organizations

If offered a job offer at Facebook, I would ultimately accept the offer given a few conditions have been met:

  1. My position is relatively temporary (I have the option and capability to move on in a few years)
  2. My role is not the direct cause of unethical action
  3. The role gives me additional flexibility (via monetary compensation and career advancement) for greater autonomy down the line.

Because the technology industry is highly competitive and saturated, I’d have to recognize that a role at Facebook would undoubtedly advance my career, granting me further options down the line. As the article mentioned, autonomy and abundance of job choices might perhaps be the most effective way to reduce my contributions to unethical practices.

Furthermore, I’d hope that the role I accept would one of positive social change, rather than one directly tied to the unethical core of any large tech organization.
