Would I work at Facebook

I would accept a job at Facebook depending on the role. For most, I would not accept. This is because Facebook has a history of causing harm to its customers through targeting teenagers and political ads. Facebook has demonstrated that its algorithms are harmful and shown it is willing to protect profits over its customers. Thus for jobs that are centered on building these algorithms and the products surrounding them, I would not accept a role.

There are however opportunities in which I believe a job at Facebook can be morally acceptable. One such example is if the role enables you to enact change from within. Granted, at a company the scale of Facebook, this likely only occurs if you are at the highest levels. Additionally, there are aspects of Facebook that are beneficial such as its accessibility, increased global internet access, real-time crisis intelligence that if I were to be working on these projects, I see this as morally strong.

Thus, my acceptance depends on the role in which I would be given. If I believe that my role would be able to change Facebook or can be morally beneficial in some capacity, then I would accept it. If I was simply contributing to the negative effects of Facebook, or even just not actively contributing to the positive effects, I would not accept a job.
