Would you accept a job at Facebook?

Even though I am fully aware of Facebook’s history of unethical practices, I would still accept a job at the company. My opinion might be based more on my personal experience with the company than the advice from the reading “Working for Ethically Complicated Organizations,” but I think both my opinion and the reading agree on similar ideas. I worked as an intern at Meta three times, and throughout the years, I have seen how the company has responded to these unethical practices, specifically those that concern the horrible handling of user data. A very problematic situation occurs when companies that hold unethical practices ignore the alarms and continue to defend and hold these practices. In such a situation, I would feel uncomfortable working long-term with that company. In Meta’s case, I have seen how they have worked to fix the issues and put practices in place to protect user data as much as possible. As a developer, I had to undergo extensive privacy training (more and more each year), and the internal values, policies, and processes surrounding user data have shifted massively in a positive direction. As it was highlighted in the reading, it is inevitable to encounter a company that participates in some unethical practices. Still, the important thing for me to feel comfortable working with them is to see some response from this company and an attempt to change for the better. This is something I observed at my time with the company and because of this I would be comfortable accepting a job at Meta.
