Product Sense Pushup 4: Three Value Propositions

Granola’s value proposition is “The AI notepad for back-to-back meetings.” First of all, I’m really impressed by this since it perfectly matches the main pain point that nearly every group in our class found during needfinding. They advertise their product as being “for the doers” and list many highly respected startups and tech companies as customers. They specifically state that they are not a meeting bot, contrasting themselves against Otter and Fireflies. It seems to be selling at the functional level, emphasizing the fact that it saves time, organizes, and reduces effort for the user.

Granola’s value prop and differentiation from competitors

Otter’s value proposition is “Your AI notetaker is now also your Conversational Knowledge Engine.” This isn’t as strong as Granola’s since it takes a minute to understand it. Otter emphasizes the actions it can take for you as an agent, which differentiates it from Granola. It brands itself as an executive assistant. They mention a wider range of companies that are customers and discuss how it can be used in education. Otter focuses on the functional level of the pyramid, but leaning into the executive assistant marketing pushes it up into emotional value by reducing anxiety.

Otter emphasizes that it acts as an executive assistant and bot

Fireflies’ value proposition is “The #1 AI Assistant For Your Meetings.” They are once again leaning into the fact that it is a bot and assistant, rather than branding like a tool as Granola does. They advertise themselves towards a wide variety of user bases, but they list Engineering 5th which is an interesting distinction from Granola. This matches the same levels of the pyramid as Otter (functional with a bit of emotional).

Fireflies lists engineers further down while Granola emphasizes them

I use Granola most often, and after this analysis I agree with that choice. I don’t love when products lean into personification of AI. I’d rather just have a tool that does its job well.
