Would you accept a job at Facebook?

Would I accept a job at Facebook? It’s not a straightforward answer to me, but I would say yes.

Let’s start by addressing why I wouldn’t. Of course, Facebook is tied to various ethical dilemmas. They profit from the spread of hate speech, disinformation, conspiracy theories, and many more. I’ve also recently read a story about Facebook’s role in providing Nebraska police chat messages to investigate an alleged illegal abortion. I’m sure there are many other cases of Facebook’s ethical failures, but this is already a big reason to not like Facebook. And I would put Amazon in this same category. Not the biggest fan of what they’re doing.

On the other hand, a big priority for me at this point is money. In Finding Jobs to Want, the author notes that when considering money as part of finding a job, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to value, and that’s the case for me as a first-generation low-income student. My biggest goal in life is to provide social mobility for my family who have endured tough lives due to financial hardships. At the end, of the day, I want to be able to help them buy a home, and there’s no other way to do that besides having money.

Going back to the question: would I accept a job at Facebook? I would do my best to avoid it and would pursue other opportunities in tech first before a job at Facebook. But, at the end of the day, if it delivers on the money aspect, on top of other factors mentioned in the article, then I would accept it. However, I would use this job as leverage to find a new job quickly (maybe about a year) to move to a new job elsewhere, which hopefully has higher pay.
