BUSINESS: Product Management in Practice

I think “You are in the middle” is a perfect description of how I now view this role. As someone who is taking his first product management class, I think this is a valuable lesson. Approaching the role from this perspective, I see a product manager as a part of the team, a part that facilitates and ensures the team’s success. Navigating your team’s communication styles, sensitivities, and differences allows you to ensure that everyone is aligned and working toward the same goals. I think from how the role is described, team building, empathy, and adaptability are some of the major themes that I picked from the reading. These scream “manage people” more than they do “manage products”. Building trust in your team and genuinely earning both respect and admiration in return, is key for a good product manager. I think such an environment is necessary for fostering collaboration, creativity, and overall success. Establishing this, what I like to think as, foundation of trust creates a positive dynamic where team members feel empowered to contribute their best work. I’m speaking from a personal experience through my summer internships, where both my end product and my overall well being in the role relied heavily on how my manager as well as the rest of the team interacted with me.

As for the Author of the book, here are some of the questions I would like to ask:

  1. In what ways can my experience outside of a corporate setting contribute to making me a more effective product manager?
  2. How do you think the balance between managing people and managing products should evolve as a product manager gains more experience?
  3. How do you balance the urgency to launch quickly with the need to ensure the product is fully refined and ready?
  4. How would you advise product managers to build trust with their teams in high-pressure environments or during periods of rapid change?
  5. How do you see the role of a product manager changing as teams become more diverse and cross-functional?
