Would I work at Facebook

My short answer is yes, but that decision hinges on a lot of factors.

When coming to this decision, I think first of how I may be able to leverage the resources that are accessible to me as an employee of this company. Facebook does a lot of harm, ranging from negative environmental impacts and exploitation of workers to the building a monopoly that has overtaken small local businesses. However, that damage will continue to exist whether or not I work there. If I had an opportunity to work in a team within Facebook that I believe is doing good to the world, even potentially alleviating some of the harm that the company does in other regards, I would strongly consider taking it. It would be very difficult to obtain the same budget that this company could provide in order to accomplish those goals.

I also think this is a question of positionality. I cannot blame someone working for an ethically complicated company if they are in desperate need and that is simply the best way for them to provide for their family; I think here of low income immigrants that are presented with opportunities to lift their loved ones out of poverty, for example. If a children of rich parents was given the same offer, I think they have a bigger safety net for looking for a job that is less problematic; why work a 9-9-6 job at a company that crafts war technology if you don’t need the money that bad? In my own case, I am a first generation, formerly undocumented college student and my parents have no savings; taking a job like this would mean having the opportunity to retire my parents. I have a moral duty to my family and community, and at the end of the day, they come first when I make this decision.
