I tracked the amount of times I picked up my phone per day, hoping to be around the 100 pickups per day (30 emails, 50 text messages, plus 20 for school (canvas, etc)). I used the iPhone Screen Time data found in settings, which document the hours someone uses there phone in a given day, the apps that are being used, how much time is being spend on those apps, how many phone pick ups there are in a day, the first app used after a phone pick up, how many notifications there are in a day, and which apps are sending out those notifications. Using this data I went about my day as normal, documenting my activities in 15 minute intervals, and using the iPhone data to note how my phone usage is correlated to my in-world activities. Using this tool to measure phone usage is very easy and effective, doesn’t require me to access any additional software (pre-installed on my phone), nor worry about manual data inputs. That being said, the 15 minute intervals of me documenting my day for more contextual data was fully manual data.
