BUSINESS: Product Management in Practice

After this reading I feel that the role of a Product Manager is super ambiguous. This ambiguity seems to lead to a lot of tasks spread across many disciplines – or even just grabbing coffee. They have to bridge different perspectives and communication styles, such as translating between business needs and user goals. This seems to lead to people overcompensating and overcomplicating their role and how it interacts with others. I loved the breakdown of the different Product Manager archetypes – Jargon Jockeys, Overachievers, Steve Jobs Acolytes, Heroes, and Product Martyrs. It’s interesting to see how a role with so much range just results in so many interesting ways to do it wrong. A good Product Manager should be supporting their team and facilitating success that the team can enjoy.

One question I would love to ask is regarding the nature of these Ambiguously Descriptive Product Roles. How do you effectively collaborate with others considering your roles may overlap? How can it then be decided who’s insight is worth more? I also have a question concerning archetypes like the Product Martyr. Is there any additional advice on setting healthy boundaries and prioritizing self well-being while excelling in a demanding role?
