How Onboarding Reflects What Apps Value Most
For Instagram, onboarding is pretty effortless: name, password, birthday, then a quick username and optional profile photo. You can skip syncing contacts and Facebook, and still scroll within seconds. Instagram’s priority is connection and content flow. The faster you start following and posting, the faster the network grows. Every extra tap, like syncing contacts, comes with a drop-off cost, but Instagram can afford it because even partial sign-ups drive engagement later.
Notion, a productivity tool, takes a different path. After basic info, it asks what kind of work you do and how you plan to use it. This slows the flow but gives Notion data to personalize your workspace. It values setup with templates, tutorials, and “Get Started” screens that invest in long-term retention rather than instant gratification.
For Venmo, friction is security. Users must verify their phone number, legal name, and age before doing anything. Bank or card verification creates the steepest drop-off, but for Venmo, trust outweighs convenience. Every verified user represents reduced fraud risk and compliance assurance, even if some abandon sign-up midway.
