8A: Team 8 Experiment Synthesis

You can read more in depth about our assumption tests and experimental design here.

Assumption 1 – Effort/Motivation

The first assumption is that our users will actually be motivated to continuously put in the effort to create a scrapbook in such a way that the time they spend outside will be sufficiently increased or improved. We want to know how we can let users feel a persistent sense of motivation and gratification.

Recruiting

We recruited four students, two of whom had passed screening previously and two of whom hadn’t. Additionally, since this test took place entirely over text, we recruited one new participant who lives in a much colder place on the east coast to get a broader range of weather. Two of our participants were given stickers as rewards for their participation, and two were given nothing at all.

Assumption 2 – Increasing Time Spent Outside

The second assumption is that taking a picture a day of the outdoors will encourage people to spend more time outdoors. We want to ensure that users will not just take a picture outside and go back inside immediately.

Recruiting

We recruited 5 people for this assumption test, 2 lab workers who spend most of their sunlight hours within a lab with no windows and 3 undergraduates who have class and work during most of their sunlight hours. We wanted to hone in on people with very tight schedules, little free time and close to no exposure to nature each day as they are our primary target audience and we hope to develop a solution that is highly effective and quick to do.
