Nah to the Facebook Kool-Aid

I disagree with Facebook’s values and the way that they do business. Their bullish approach to growth, lack of accountability, and unwillingness to take ownership of these characteristics sit in firm opposition to the way that I define ethical and meaningful impact.

My only reason to join Facebook would be to execute a “Trojan Horse” attempt at product and organizational overhaul. However, to have influence in an organization, you have to demonstrate value according to the criteria that organization has created to define and measure both success and impact. You also have to adopt the customs and behaviors accepted by their culture.

This means, to acquire the influence needed to changes values, process, and, product, I would have to conform to them for some, likely non-negligible period of time. How much damage would I further their broken mission during this period? Would I give up and drink the Kool-Aid at some point along the way? I can speculate but don’t intend to ever concretely answer these questions–so, no, I wouldn’t work at Facebook.
