READING: Ethical Jobs [AW]

“Would you accept a job at Facebook?”

It really depends on what my priorities in life are at the time. The reading mentions the argument of your responsibility to your friends and loved ones being greater than your responsibility to be honest with yourself and avoid some cognitive dissonance. My priority in life currently is to provide for my family, and I chose the path I knew I could succeed in and get a high-paying job in right after college. I want to help contribute to my brother’s college tuition. Of course, my new grad job is also good for my resume. I just don’t think I get the privilege of having this morally ethical duty over everything else in my life (career trajectory, family, social life) just yet. Maybe later though, and maybe now if I held that duty closer to my heart.

When it comes to Facebook specifically, I’ve always had some bad taste in my life when thinking of recruiting for them. Maybe it just wasn’t a cultural fit, but I don’t like the idea of working for social media (though what isn’t social media nowadays), especially places so concentrated on ads. I’m simply not interested in making people more addicted to phones. Nothing would prompt me to recruit for Facebook myself, but let’s say I got an offer, a really good one. I’d think about it.
