Drinking Water Before Bed
Behavior Over 48 Hours
Night 1: Drank water before bed
Night 2: No water before bed
Experience
On night 1, when I drank water before bed, I woke up in the middle of the night and could not go back to sleep for hours usual. This perpetuated the cycle modeled below of me feeling tired and bloated the following morning that lead me to over-caffeinate and take melatonin later at night to sleep.
I do think the logging/tracking my habit of drinking water prevented me from drinking a ton of water the second night. As a result, I slept through the night. I drank less coffee the next day – both because I was less tired and likely because I was tracking my habits.
In the future, I will prioritize drinking water at least an hour before my scheduled bed time to prioritize quality sleep. I can reinforce this behavior by carrying a water bottle with me and taking sips throughout the day to keep myself hydrated rather than drinking a ton of water at night.
