Our group is researching negative screen time and phone habits, targeting young students and adults who feel like they spend too much of their daily lives on their phones. The proto-persona I created, M.F., is consolidated after several undergraduate interviewees we talked to. Here’s the profile of M.F.:
Name | M.F. | |
Activated Role | A college student
Goal | Spend less time mindlessly browsing on their phone
Motivation | Live a healthier, more productive life and spend more time on more fulfilling things like reading and hanging out with friends
Conflict | Whenever they are under pressure or anxious, or have small chunks of time, they would open social media and that brings them down a black hole, because the mental effort to stop scrolling is greater than their motivation to reduce negative screen time.
Attempts to Solve | They tried deleting the social media apps, but after a while, they would download them back for social purposes. They tried setting a limit on screen time, but everytime they reached the limit, they would extend the screen time by 15 minutes.
Setting/ Environment | On college campus
Tools & Skills | They use their phone for communication via messages and entertainment, laptop for schoolwork and communication via email/slack. They would have their partner set the password of screen time so that they cannot extend the screen time themselves.

During each interview I conducted, I asked the interviewee to walk me through their day and how they use their phone throughout the day, based upon which I created the following journey map. I detailed the 8 major events in M.F.’s weekday, their actions, touch points, thoughts and feelings relevant to their phone usage, and some issues we should consider in helping M.F. reduce negative phone usage and live a more healthy life.
