CASE STUDY: We Know What You Did

Our product is a market place for student art merchandise. Having an advertising revenue model for our product may have the following pros and cons.

pros:

  • It is natural for a merchandise ad to blend in a collection of merchandises (like restaurant ads on Yelp and food delivery apps).
  • Our revenue model (taking a cut from transactions) is not very consistent and the amount is not big. More revenue model means more income.

cons:

  • If we have ads for certain merchandises on our platform, it would be unfair to other sellers.
  • When a buyer keeps seeing the same ads every time they open the app, they may think our app is boring/annoying.

For the internet overall,

pros:

  • Having an advertising revenue model enables a lot of webs to be free.

cons:

  • Now that the ads has become the default, we need to pay to remove them on some platforms (Youtube, Spotify, etc.)
  • Users’ data are under surveillance and sold to other companies for targeted ads.
