(9/27) Ethical Jobs Reading Response

Would I work at Facebook? At this point in my life, I would not. Facebook is a company that is embroiled in controversy as it does not take accountability for the content posted on the platform. I personally do not agree with how the company handles this issue. They take a very passive position against false information and violent calls-to-action. While they are not creators of the content on their site, they do have a responsibility to maintain community standards on content.

I personally feel that Facebook would not be the place where my personal skills are maximized. There are so many other companies out there to work at, and I think I can gain similar skills at different companies. I also am not a huge fan of Facebook’s products on a personal level (Facebook, Instagram), so I would not be passionate about the products created. In my opinion, there are so many great companies out there, and I do not believe that Facebook is a place that would be a good fit for me.

I also believe there is a difference between using a product from a “problematic” company and giving them your brain. Yes, Facebook makes money whenever I scroll past an ad. However, I think they would make more money from me if I gave my time, effort, and brain to them. It is hard to lead a life completely without “problematic” companies as there are so many (Amazon comes to mind). But, I think there is a difference between being a conscious consumer and an active promoter for the company. So, personally, nope.
