Would you accept a job at Facebook?

This question took some deep reflection on my personal values to answer. Since everyone different values, the “correct” answer to this question is different for every individual in terms of finding ethical and meaningful work. Section 5.1 of Business Ethics lists several values that are helpful in guiding the search for a job. Of some of the values listed, a job being meaningful, allowing leisure time, and providing security resonate with me. A job at Facebook can provide opportunities that fit these values. While Facebook has been involved in some unethical practices, such as during the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, not all work done at Facebook is detrimental. Some examples of neutral or positive work done include the creation of the React JavaScript library which has helped for building user interfaces and the creation of Facebook Marketplace which has helped grassroots entrepreneurs in third world countries. Thus, depending on the specific work being done at Facebook, one can find meaning in their work and create the positive impact with the resources that Facebook has to offer. Furthermore, jobs at Facebook are often high paying and high in security. Even if the work being done at Facebook is not directly meaningful, the money the job provides can be used as a tool to get the time and security to pursue other meaningful tasks. This is the idea of instrumentalism. For these reasons, I would consider accepting a job at Facebook.
